MORPHOSIS
The benefits of Seaweed as a source of organic matter and fertilizer nutrients have led to their use as soil conditioners for centuries. Seaweed exhibit growth-stimulating activities and the use of seaweed formulations as bio-stimulants in crop production is well established. Bio-Stimulants are defined as "materials, other than fertilizers, that promote plant growth when applied in small quantities" and are also referred to as "metabolic enhancers". Seaweed components such as Macro and Microelement nutrients, amino acids, vitamins, cytokinin, auxins and abscisic acid (ABA) - like growth substances affect cellular metabolism in treated plants leading to enhanced growth and crop yield. Besides eliciting a growth-promoting effect on plants, seaweeds also affect the physical, chemical and biological properties of soil which in turn influence plant growth. Seaweeds and seaweed extracts enhance soil health by improving moisture-holding capacity and by promoting the growth of beneficial soil microbes. Brown Seaweeds are rich in polyuronides such as alginates and fucoidans. Salts of alginic acid combine with the metallic ions in the soil to form high-molecular-weight complexes that absorb moisture, swell, retain soil mixture and improve crumb structure. This results in better soil aeration and capillary activity of soil pores which in turn stimulate the growth of the plant root system as well as boost soil microbial activity.
